Local Conditions

Built for New Zealand Conditions

Glass fencing has to handle everything from coastal salt air to strong winds and heavy rain across New Zealand. We select grade 316 stainless steel hardware for coastal and exposed sites, and specify glass thickness and fixing centres to suit local wind zones.
Cleaning and Maintenance

Keeping Your Glass Looking Sharp

Rinse glass with fresh water regularly, especially near the coast.
Use mild soap and a soft cloth — avoid abrasive cleaners.
Check spigot fixings for movement or corrosion annually.
Avoid pointing a high-pressure washer directly at seals or fixings.
Know Before You Build

Safety and Compliance

Toughened safety glass used in fencing is manufactured to shatter into small, blunt fragments rather than sharp shards if broken. Where a glass fence forms part of a pool barrier, it must also meet the pool fencing requirements in the NZ Building Code (Clause F9) — height, gap spacing and gate hardware all apply. See our Pool Fencing page for full compliance details.
This is general guidance based on publicly available information and is not legal advice. Always confirm current requirements with your local council's Building Consent Authority before building or altering a pool barrier.

Fence installation rules in New Zealand

  • A building consent is usually not required for a fence up to 2.5m, but district-plan height, street-frontage, heritage and visibility rules can still apply.
  • Pool barriers require building consent and must comply with Building Code clause F9; gates must restrict unsupervised access by children under five.
  • For a shared boundary, the Fencing Act 1978 sets the notice process and generally provides for neighbours to share the reasonable cost of an adequate fence.
  • Confirm the legal boundary before building; retaining walls, easements and work near services may need specialist advice.

General guidance only. Check your council and project-specific requirements before construction.

FAQs

Glass Fencing FAQs

How much does Glass Fencing cost?
Costs vary depending on scope, materials and site conditions. See our pricing guide above for typical rates, or request a free, no-obligation quote for an exact price.
How long does glass fencing take to complete?
Most residential jobs are completed within a few days to a week depending on scope and site access. We’ll confirm a clear timeframe with your quote.
Do I need council consent?
Many jobs don’t require consent, but some heights, structures or site conditions do. We’ll advise on any consent requirements specific to your project.
What materials do you use?
We use quality, New Zealand-appropriate materials suited to your budget and site — ask us about the specific options for your project.
Do you offer a warranty on your work?
Yes — all our work is backed by a workmanship guarantee, plus manufacturer warranties on materials where applicable.
Do you offer free quotes?
Yes — every job starts with a free, no-obligation quote. We’ll assess your site and give you a clear, itemised price with no hidden costs.
What areas do you service?
We service all of New Zealand, with local teams covering residential, rural and commercial work nationwide.
Is frameless or semi-frameless glass better?
Frameless gives the cleanest, most uninterrupted view but costs more; semi-frameless is more affordable with only a slim post visible. See our comparison above.
How thick is the glass you use?
We typically use 10mm or 12mm toughened safety glass manufactured to AS/NZS 2208, sized to suit your site’s wind zone.
Will the hardware rust near the coast?
We use grade 316 stainless steel spigots and fittings on coastal and exposed sites for better corrosion resistance.
How do I clean my glass fence?
Rinse with fresh water and use a mild soap with a soft cloth — avoid abrasive cleaners and don’t point a high-pressure washer directly at the seals.
Does glass pool fencing meet Building Code requirements?
Yes, when installed to spec — glass pool fencing must still meet the NZ Building Code pool fencing rules (height, gaps, self-closing gates). See our Safety and Compliance section above.
What happens if a glass panel breaks?
Toughened safety glass is designed to break into small, blunt fragments rather than sharp shards, and we can replace individual panels without redoing the whole fence.
