All fences around a swimming pool must comply with the Building Act 2004 and the pool fencing requirements in the NZ Building Code (Clause F9).
Fences must generally be at least 1.2m high, with no gaps that a child could climb through or squeeze under.
A “non-climbable zone” must be kept clear around the fence — no furniture, planters or structures that could help a child climb over.
Gates must be self-closing and self-latching, opening away from the pool, with the latch mechanism out of reach of young children.
